Once Upon a Nation is an initiative of Historic Philadelphia Inc., and encompasses a variety of interactive experiences meant to bring history to life. As a part of the program, thirteen storytelling benches dot the Historic District, where you can hear some of the less-well-known tales of our nation’s history. At Harmony Lane, you can learn how to play colonial games. At the Independence Living History Center, you may get a chance to watch the restoration of colonial artifacts unearthed from right under your feat. You may wish to watch magicians and comedians entertain outside the Betsy Ross House, or hold a conversation with Benjamin Franklin under the mulberry tree.

Besides the many free activities, Once Upon a Nation also offers a number of adventure tours and evening performances. On the Independence After Hours Tour, enjoy dinner at the historic City Tavern. Then take a nighttime tour of Independence Hall where you will listen in on the events of the time being
debated. On Tippler’s Tour, visit a number of Philadelphia’s historic taverns and bars. At Colonial Kid’s Quest, help solve a mystery involving the missing Declaration of Independence. Enjoy a sing-along-screening of “1776: The Musical” complete with props, or feel chills down your spine as you visit historic burial grounds and stop for a chat with Edgar Allen Poe.

New to Once Upon a Nation in 2006 is the restored Franklin Square. The Square is a fun place to take a break from your colonial explorations. Relax by the 19th century fountain as your children run free in the two playgrounds. Play a round of Philly Mini Golf or take a ride on the carousel.
