The Philadelphia Zoo was the first Zoo to open in the United States. It features over 1500 animals in a setting of Victorian gardens and historical architecture.
Highlights of exhibits include:
Bank of America Big Cat Falls: The Zoo’s newest, state-of-the-art exhibit allows visitors to feel closer than ever to the Zoo’s lions, tigers, leopards, jaguars, and pumas. The cats wander a large exhibit space filled with lush vegetation, waterfalls, ponds, and rivers.
PECO Primate Reserve: Designed to resemble an abandoned logging camp, Primate Reserve is home to gorillas, orangutans, lemurs, gibbons, and other primates.
Birds of Australia: Offer a cup of nectar as the Zoo’s family of lorikeets perch on you for a quick snack.
African Plains: In this area, visitors can encounter some of their favorite African animals, including zebras, giraffes, rhinos, and cheetahs.
Tastykake Children’s Zoo: The Philadelphia Zoo was the first zoo in the nation to have a special area for children. The tradition continues with the Tastykake Children’s Zoo, where visitors can pet and feed sheep and goats. One can also get up-close and personal with cows, rabbits, and lots of creepy-crawly bugs.
Dodge Rare Animal Conservation Center: In this indoor exhibit, encounter a number of rare and endangered animals such as the naked mole rat, Rodrigues fruit bat, and golden lion tamarin. Also learn about the important role the Philadelphia Zoo and zoos around the nation have in conservation.
The exhibits listed above are only a few of the many at America’s First Zoo. Admission is $16.95 for adults and $13.95 for children from April 1st to December 30th. Admission during the remainder of the year is $12.95 for both adults and children.
