The Regional Performing Arts Center (RPAC) opened in December 2001 as a two-facility, three-venue arts complex of more than 6000 seats. The first venue is the beloved Academy of Music, which hosts the Pennsylvania Ballet and the Opera Company of Philadelphia, along with concerts and Broadway shows.
The second facility is the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts at Broad and Spruce Streets. The spectacular, glass-domed Kimmel Center was designed by world-renowned architect Raphael Viñoly. It includes two main facilities. The first is a new state-of-the-art 2500-seat concert hall (Verizon Hall), which is the new home of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Philly Pops. The second is a 650-seat, multi-use, technologically advanced recital hall and theater (Perelman Theater), which is the new home to the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, the Concerto Soloists Chamber Orchestra, the American Theater Arts for Youth, and Philadanco.
In addition, the Kimmel Center includes a 150-seat black-box theater and rehearsal hall, an education center, a rooftop garden terrace, a café and restaurant, and gift shop. It also includes Commonwealth Plaza, an indoor town square.
(Note: The original Chairman of the Board of RPAC was Willard G. Rouse III, well-known to Philadelphians as the man behind the precedent-setting Liberty Place, the dramatic Philadelphia Stock Exchange Building, and the beautiful Society Hill Sheraton Hotel. He also directed the development of the Pennsylvania Convention Center.)
