August 12, 2008: Center City Macy's Brings in the Holidays
This year Macy's Holiday Light Show will be getting a new (or old) addition. Those of you who remember the yearly Holiday Light Show at the "Wanamaker Building" (which has now been converted to a Macy's) will remember that the star of the show was the Magical Christmas Tree. For several years, however, the tree has been missing from the show. Lord & Taylor, the previous tenant of the building, removed the tree from the show in the winter of 2001.
The original Christmas Tree was disposed of by Lord & Taylor, so Macy's decided to have a new one created. The tree is currently under construction, and should appear during the 2008 Holiday Season. While the tree might not look exactly like the original, Macy's is working to make it as close as possible to the tree that yearly show visitors know and love. The new tree will also be even brighter, thanks to the addition of LED lighting.
discoverphilly.com would like to thank Macy's for continued work to restore this Philadelphia tradition, which was originally created for the Wanamaker Department Store in 1955.
While visiting Macy’s this Christmas season, also don’t miss the Dicken’s Holiday Village (formerly from Strawbridge & Clothier), and their holiday windows.
November 4, 2007: Major Renovation of the Gallery at Market East
Plans for a major renovation of the Gallery at Market East shopping center are in the works. A new department store tenant has been obtained for the space formerly occupied by Strawbridge & Clothier. At present plans include the addition of sit-down dining options, and improvements to the interior and the Market Street facade. Look for more details coming in early 2008, with a project completion expected in 2009.
